Polar vortex animation during Stratospheric Sudden Warming / Stratospheric Vortex Weakening events (Northern-Hemisphere)

Animated evolution of stratospheric polar vortex at 10 hPa

The evolution of Stratospheric Sudden Warming (SSW) or Stratospheric Vortex Weakening (SVW) events. Final warming events are included. Detection criterion uses -2.0 as threshold to illustrate minor events as well. Dates indicate weakest vortex state according to NAM index and therefore differ from classical SSW definition. Please refer to [1, 2] for detailed methodology for computing NAM index. Other relevant references for the NAM index include [3, 4, 5, 6]
